Why Do We Meditate? What Do We Gain from It? (English Subtitle)

Q: I am enrolled in Buddhism class this fall. I do 108 prostrations an meditation every morning. But a lot of distracting thoughts arise when I meditate. I concentrate, still the thoughts arise, then I notice to go back to concentration. Then more thoughts arise, then 10 minutes pass by quickly. So, today I sat for 30 more minutes but the thoughts still kept arising. Going on this way, I don’t think I will get to see myself. I would like to know why we meditate and what we gain from it.

Wisdom For You

Awakening is not far away
If you’re married,
if you have a child,
if you go bankrupt,
if you have cancer,
or if you are old,
instead of suffering,
look for opportunities to be awakened.

There are things you can realize
only when you are old,
only when you are sick,
only when you are divorced,
only when you are betrayed.

Awakening is not far away.
Awakening is wherever your mind arises.
