\u201cToday, on the 70th anniversary of the Korean War armistice, the crisis on the Korean Peninsula has been amplified and exacerbated by the geopolitical crisis in Northeast Asia and the global New Cold War,\u201d the interfaith signatories stated in their preamble to the peace declaration. \u201cVarious talks, including the bilateral, quadrilateral, and six-party talks, that have taken place over the last three decades have all broken down with no signs of resumption. All agreements made between the two sides over the past four decades have been either not implemented or broken, and no efforts are being made to honor and restore them. In Northeast Asia, the US-China conflict over the South China Sea and Taiwan has escalated into a global hegemonic competition, and battle lines are being drawn between South Korea, the US, Japan, and the EU on one side and North Korea, China, and Russia on the other, much like the Cold War.\u201d (Pomnyun)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ven. Pomnyun Sunim: <\/strong>If North Korea were to collapse and South Korea were to merge with it, numerous social problems would arise. Unification would result in North Koreans becoming the second-largest population in a unified Korea. Looking at the reunification of Germany 30 years ago, despite their political proficiency, an income gap between Germans from the east and west persists. The Korean Seon (Zen) master Venerable Pomnyun Sunim (\ubc95\ub95c\uc2a4\ub2d8) wears many hats: Buddhist monk, teacher, author, environmentalist, and social activist, to name a few. As a widely respected Dharma teacher and a tireless socially engaged activist in his native South Korea, Ven. Pomnyun Sunim has founded numerous Dharma-based organizations, initiatives, and projects that are active across the world. Among them, Jungto Society, a volunteer-based community founded on the Buddhist teachings and expressing equality, simple living, and sustainability, is dedicated to addressing modern social issues that lead to suffering, including environmental degradation, poverty, and conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q. When discussing reunification on the Korean Peninsula, it\u2019s likely that the problem of wealth disparity between the two Koreas will become significant, and negative issues such as jealousy, arrogance, and crime could come to the forefront. What kind of education should we provide to young people who display indifference or opposition toward reunification?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Ven. Pomnyun Sunim: <\/strong>If North Korea were to collapse and South Korea were to merge with it, numerous social problems would arise. Unification would result in North Koreans becoming the second-largest population in a unified Korea. Looking at the reunification of Germany 30 years ago, despite their political proficiency, an income gap between Germans from the east and west persists. There were various side effects, but few Germans believe that not reunifying would have been a better option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 70th anniversary of the Korean Armistice Agreement commemorates the signing of the landmark ceasefire agreement on 27 July 1953, marking the official cessation of hostilities of the Korean War. The document, which remains in effect today, was intended as a precursor to a formal peace treaty that would end the state of war between North and South Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToday, on the 70th anniversary of the Korean War armistice, the crisis on the Korean Peninsula has been amplified and exacerbated by the geopolitical crisis in Northeast Asia and the global New Cold War,\u201d the interfaith signatories stated in their preamble to the peace declaration. \u201cVarious talks, including the bilateral, quadrilateral, and six-party talks, that have taken place over the last three decades have all broken down with no signs of resumption. All agreements made between the two sides over the past four decades have been either not implemented or broken, and no efforts are being made to honor and restore them. In Northeast Asia, the US-China conflict over the South China Sea and Taiwan has escalated into a global hegemonic competition, and battle lines are being drawn between South Korea, the US, Japan, and the EU on one side and North Korea, China, and Russia on the other, much like the Cold War.\u201d (Pomnyun)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New Korea Forum is a monthly conference that invites prominent social figures and leaders to address various topics related to peace and unification of the Korean Peninsula, to discuss national development, and to push initiatives working toward the establishment of peace worldwide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTensions are escalating on the Korean Peninsula, and the risk of war has reached an alarming level. We need to find a breakthrough,\u201d Ven. Pomnyun Sunim observed during an informal conversation ahead of his keynote address. \u201cIdeally, persuading the South Korean government to address this crisis would be the best course of action. If that\u2019s not possible, an alternative approach would be to persuade the United States to improve its relations with North Korea as a means to resolve this crisis. If that doesn\u2019t work, we could explore the possibility of engaging in discussions with Japan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
