How Can I Have Goals in Life without Getting Attached?

Selection from a Dharma Q&A session at Jogyesa Temple, Seoul (June 14, 2019)

March 27, 2021

Q: My question is about non-attachment and goals in life. I have noticed that having goals in relationship or career can bring a lot of stress. For example, when I was applying to do my exchange in Korea, I was worried something might go wrong with my application and I have a lot of stress. And I learned that not being attached to things could bring happiness and less stress but I still think I still have to have some goals that I want to achieve in my life. So how would it be possible to combine these two things in my everyday life?

Wisdom For You

Do you regret some of your past actions?

Regret is rooted in self-blame.
Regret is an emotion that arises when you don’t understand yourself.
It’s foolish to blame yourself and feel regret for what has already happened.
Instead, view it with a light heart and accept it was simply a mistake.
Vow that you won’t make that same mistake again and then move on.
