Q: Oftentimes, when I speak to Buddhist monks or academics, when I asked the question “What is enlightenment?” I’m given an answer on the lines of “It’s not something that a layperson could understand” or “It’s something that you’ll understand when you reach enlightenment.” I was wondering as a Buddhist if you could give me a description of not necessarily what it is, but what it means to be enlightened?
