For a Green Rohingya Refugee Camp

For a Green Rohingya Refugee Camp

Follow-up Story of JTS’s Gas Stove Donation to the Rohingya Refugees

In 2019, JTS provided 100,000 gas stoves to the Rohingya refugees

At the time, 700,000 refugees who escaped the genocide in Myanmar were living in the Rohingya refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) provided the refugees with food, and the refugees cut down trees to cook the food.

This caused deforestation around the refugee camp, and women and children had to walk far to gather firewood, which exposed them to sexual assault.

Also, cooking with firewood inside a closed space created excess smoke, which caused various health problems.

The gas stoves provided by JTS helped 500,000 refugees.

Since women and children don’t have to gather firewood, they are now much safer. Also, children have time to study and play.

Three years later…

Three years have passed since the gas stoves were delivered to the Rohingya refugees.

When JTS volunteers revisited the refugee camp in 2022, they were impressed by the green forest that has regrown.

In October last year, upon receiving a request from the UN for additional gas stoves, JTS visited manufacturers in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

In March of this year, JTS signed a contract to purchase 100,000 gas stoves. The manufacturing and the delivery of the gas stoves are expected to be completed around July.

We hope that the second shipment of the gas stoves are delivered safely.

Wisdom For You

When you are suffering from feelings of loneliness or emptiness that is a good time to take a look at yourself.
You may notice that you are trying to fill the void inside you with something external.
If you let go of the desire to fill the void, the feeling of emptiness will disappear.
