One shouldn’t be discriminated against for one’s sexual orientation, so homosexuals should be able to have romantic relationships and get married. But in Korea, same sex marriage has not yet been legalized. When I visited Europe before, I met a homosexual couple. They were living in Europe because same sex marriages are not recognized in Korea. They said that they were living there because they didn’t want to hide their relationship even though it was not as comfortable to live there as in Korea. Likewise, you don’t have to advertise that you are a homosexual but you don’t need to hide it anymore.

However, you need to think more carefully about marrying a heterosexual woman. Whether you are sexually attracted to a person of the opposite sex or the same sex, you have a male body and thus having sex with a female might result in pregnancy. Any woman who has started a family would like to have intimate relationship with her spouse. Therefore, a woman who is unknowingly married to a homosexual man will suffer greatly. When her husband is not attracted to her sexually, she might mistakenly think, “Maybe he has another woman.” Then, how difficult her life would be.

Once a woman who was married with two children consulted me because her husband couldn’t bear his secrecy anymore and came out of the closet. After finding out her husband was a homosexual, she had a very difficult time. It is all right for you to find some satisfaction in life as a homosexual, but the issue here is whether you have the right to hurt another person. If you get married to hide your sexual orientation and then seek fulfillment of your homosexual desire, your spouse will suffer greatly. I think it is immoral to hurt another human being like that.

However, if you really want to get married, I think it is all right for you to marry after speaking honestly with your future wife about your sexual orientation. I think it would be all right if she agrees to marry you after you tell her honestly that you might not be so eager to have sex with her because of your sexual orientation.

Q: I love children so I want to control my sexual desire and have a happy family. However, same-sex marriage is not legal in Korea, so I wonder if there is a way for me to have a family and live with them while making efforts to serve them and practice?

P: Of course, there is. If you want to have a family, controlling your sexual desire through practice is necessary, but there is a risk of divorce if your wife finds out your sexual orientation later. So I think it is better for you to reveal your sexual orientation honestly before you get married. What I am saying is that you should choose a woman who can accept your sexual orientation first of all. In return, you need to promise that you will be faithful to your family. I think that marrying a woman after telling her, “I will control my sexual desire through practice” is the decent thing to do. I want you to try that.

Q: Thank you very much. Actually I am grateful that I was born in Korea. If I had been born in an Arab country or a very conservative country, I would have been executed for being a homosexual. Or if I had been born in another time, for example during the Joseon dynasty, I would have faced much bigger problems. So I am content with my current situation, but I wish that our society is more accepting of homosexuals.

P: Even if it is slow, our society is changing little by little in that direction. Everyone has the right to be happy. I think it is better for everyone to live in a place where they can enjoy happiness as much as possible.

If you still want to get married in Korea, choose a woman who can truly understand you, accept you, and share love even if you can’t have sex, instead of choosing a woman based on appearance or other conditions. Marrying a woman without revealing your homosexual orientation will become a source of marital problems later. It is wrong to make another person unhappy for you to be happy.

Q: I will bear that in mind. Thank you very much.

P: Give him a big round of applause for sharing his difficult problem.

Nevertheless, there is no need to consider homosexuality something special. As you know not all heterosexual men can have romantic relationships with women. To have a romantic relationship, one needs someone whom one likes. Likewise, if a homosexual wants a romantic relationship, he or she needs someone whom he or she likes and the attraction should be mutual. This is also true for heterosexuals. If a man keeps approaching a woman despite her refusal, it becomes sexual harassment. Don’t consider homosexuality something special or think, “I can’t have a romantic relationship because I am a homosexual.” A heterosexual man has to give up a romantic relationship if the attraction is not mutual and you have to accept that the same goes for homosexuals.

If two people like each other, they can have a romantic relationship. When a person marries a person of opposite sex, expression of sexual desire is allowed. The expression of heterosexual desire is called love and is considered normal.

In the past, homosexuality was vilified due to prejudice, but it shouldn’t be vilified anymore. We are living in an era when the legalization of same sex-marriage is happening.

You could live in Korea. But you are still young and if it is very difficult for you to control your sexual desire, you could live in a place where same sex-marriage is already legal, such as Europe.

I Was Born A Sexual Minority.
